Batman: Cel by Cel After the financial and critical success of the Batman film in 1989, many people were prompted to ask the question, "What's next for the Dark Knight?" Besides the release of a film sequel, Batman Returns, in 1992, this same year saw the introduction of an animated program that shattered the definition of "cartoon" and set a buzz throughout the animation world. This program was Batman: The Animated Series (or BTAS for short), and most Batman fans cheered the dark, edgy approach that the show took. Drawing inspiration from Tim Burton's Batman films and, of course, the comics themselves, all incarnations of the animated series are visually and sonically astounding, in addition to being well-written. In my opinion, it is one of the best cartoons ever made, and is by far the best comic-based animated program to ever hit the airwaves. © 1998 Michael Day.
